Motivation

The second GROWTH annual meeting will bring the team together to discuss time-domain science highlights from the past year, internship reports from students and postdocs, plans for the upcoming year especially with the advent of the Zwicky Transient Facility and the increased sensitivity of Gravitational Wave detectors.

Venue

The conference will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Conference sessions will take places in the UWM Student Union and the new Kenwood Interdisciplinary Research Complex . Click here to access the UWM interactive campus map.


Accommodation

Please be aware that the conference hotel is now SpringHill Suites by Marriott. The new hotel is located 3.5 miles south of the UWM campus. A block of rooms is reserved for conference participants at the preferential rate of $109/night. To take advantage of this rate, you need to book your accommodation before September 18. If you reserved a hotel room at the previous location, your reservation has been automatically transferred to SpringHill Suites.

Double rooms are reserved for undergraduate/graduate students and postdocs who are encouraged to share a room. Other participants should book a single room. When you finalize your travel arrangements and book your flight tickets, please reserve your room online by

  • Clicking on this dedicated link. You will be asked to provide a credit card. Please, go ahead and do so. Your card will not be charged at this point. If your accommodation expenses are covered by GROWTH, no further actions are required. If you will cover the accommodation cost on a different grant (applicable to our international partners), you can choose your method of payment when you arrive at the hotel.

This will ensure you have booked a room at the preferential rates of $109/night offered to GROWTH. Participants whose accommodation will be sponsored by GROWTH should note that incidentals and parking ($20 per night) are not covered by the grant.

The room reservation includes a hot breakfast buffet every morning, 24-hour business center, complimentary wireless service, and fitness center. Within the hotel is Doc’s Smokehouse, which offers traditional southern-style barbecue. The hotel is located in Milwaukee’s downtown, near the vibrant Riverwalk that will lead you to some of the city’s best waterfront restaurants, brewpubs, shops and nightlife. Within walking distance are several downtown attractions, including a variety of bars and restaurants: The King and I(Thai, 0.2mi); Kiku (Japanese, 0.2mi); The Rumpus Room (American Gastropub, 0.6mi; Mader’s Restaurant (German, 0.3mi))

A shuttle will pick up participants from the hotel every morning and drop them off at the conference venue on the UWM campus. In the evening, the shuttle will take people back to the hotel. The departure time to/from SpringHill Suites will be provided in your welcome package.

Travel

The best airport to fly into is the General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) which is about 15 miles from campus (25 minutes by car/taxi in regular traffic). You can also fly to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) or Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW). These airports are each about two hours from Milwaukee by bus or train. From the Chicago airports to Milwaukee, we recommend you use Coach USA bus services. If you fly into Milwaukee (MKE), you can use the GoRiteway Airport Transportation Shuttle or take a taxi. Another option is the Milwaukee County Transit Bus System (MCTS). You will need to purchase a bus pass from the driver with $2.25 in cash (1-way ticket). The Green Line will take you to the campus area; take the Green Line (see schedule from the airport to the “Kenwood” stop to arrive at the UWM campus.
